AAFES, Base Open ‘Food Truck Plaza’ To Serve Hungry Troops

• FORT STEWART, Ga.
Food trucks have become an important part of Fort Stewart’s on-base dining environment, and on Aug. 13, the installation and the Army & Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) marked the official opening of “Food Truck Plaza,” signifying this importance.
In 2017, Fort Stewart became one of the first bases to utilize food trucks as part of an Army-wide initiative to bring nutritious food to the Soldiers where they work.
Prior to the arrival of food trucks, Soldiers had to go to a dining facility (DFAC), which was not always a convenient option, or pay out of pocket to eat on the economy.
Spc. Junior Avala, a tanker assigned to 2nd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, said having food available close to where Soldiers work can save valuable time.
“When you’re coming back from training or working in the motor pool, convenience is important,” Avala said. “Having food options closer to where Soldiers are working saves time and gives us more choices instead of having to leave post or wait until later to eat.”

FUTURE OPTIONS

Food trucks give Fort Stewart Soldiers access to meals beyond what is traditionally available at a DFAC …
Although that might soon change, as the base is also slated to be getting its own new Army Campus-Style Dining Venue (CSDV) later this year.
