AAFES, Non-Profit Organization Help Families As School Openings Near

• FORT HOOD, Texas

Military families brace for the coming of the new school year as all families do, and the base here held the Corvettes & Kids Fun Day event on Aug. 2, which saw a local non-profit organization and the Army & Air Force Exchange Service’s (AAFES) West Fort Hood Express provide a fun community event just prior to school openings.

Beyond handing out school supplies, AAFES put together a giveaway for the families, where children could win packed backpacks and a gift basket filled with goodies.

The non-profit Mid Texas Corvette Club brought their cars for children and parents to check out, as well as donated school supplies, including colored pencils, scissors and notebooks, to the AAFES-hosted event.

“Our mission is to take care of the kids in the community and so that’s what we do,” said Samuel Blanks, president of the Mid Texas Corvette Club, who, along with club Vice President (VP) Phillip Tucker, handed out many of the school supplies to appreciative families.

“We are all veterans,” Blanks noted. “We all have served, so we know what some of the needs are. So we’re just here to give back. It’s an awesome feeling.”
