If the federal government shuts down on Jan. 31, the Army & Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) and its sister exchanges — the Navy Exchange Service Command (NEXCOM), the Marine Corps Exchange (MCX) and the Coast Guard Exchange (CGX) — will remain open.
In order to avoid a shutdown, Congress needs to pass an appropriations package before current funding for much of the federal government expires at 12:01 a.m. ET on Saturday, Jan. 31.
Military exchanges remain open during a shutdown because they are largely not funded with appropriations, “and, as a non-appropriated fund entity, most of the operating budget comes from the sale of goods and services,” said AAFES Director/Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Tom Shull.
“MISSION-FOCUSED”
Talking specifically about AAFES, Shull noted, “’Team Exchange’ perseveres in being mission-focused and taking care of Soldiers, Airmen, Guardians, veterans and families no matter the challenges.
“These heroes need their hard-earned Exchange benefit the most during these times — and we will continue to provide the same level of support and care that is an Exchange hallmark.”
Shull said that supervisors will update associates on updates regarding a potential government shutdown, and associates will not see any interruption in payroll.
